In all my years of education and first days of school with my own 5 children - nothing compared to this day - September 2nd, 2014.
All summer lesson plans, safety, procedures, purchases, activities were brainstormed, pondered, revised, reviewed, discussed, and revised again. Then back up plans, rain dates and "what ifs" continued to flow. All of us were prepared academically, mentally and emotionally-over prepared.
Our wide eyed students were greeted with more than enough staff. They were anxious. Oh yes, our students were anxious. But when we walked in together there were exhales-from all of us. Throughout the day our teachers and I exchanged glances, quick smiles and winks. We got this.
And even better - the kids got this - they were happy. There was comfort, calm, relief, understanding that this school year was going to be different. We are all in this together - we belong here.
There will be hurdles; actually one after the other. But we are all going to leap, jump and trip together. And we will all get back up - and learn.
September 2nd, 2014 will now be my very favorite first day of school, because it will mark the first of many first days at Arete Academy. When we all walk in together, exhale, and know we belong.
