Overview of Culture Creating
Culture influences choice, plain and simple. And as social science has established that behavior is largely a product of immediate environment, a teacher's best chance to influence student choice in the right direction is to create a classroom culture empowering students to choose success for themselves. They must want success, and our class culture can help.
Principle One - High Expectations
Students generally perform to the level of their own exceptions, whether high or low. Our class culture, therefore, is critical. If we hold students to high behavioral and academic expectations individualized for them, they are more likely to raise their own. So, together we'll learn the process of defining, communicating, and following through on high student expectations which, over time, make your expectations of them become their expectations for themselves.
Principle Two - Relationships of Respect and Trust
Teacher-student relationships of respect and trust provide the necessary intrinsic motivation for a student to raise their personal expectations. The cords that permit a teacher to lead students are only as strong as their relationship. So, together we'll learn the concepts of "The Relationship Spectrum," "Quadruple P Interactions," and "Intrinsic Motivation," all of which strengthen our relationship cords and empower students to follow you up the path of success.
Principle Three - Reinforce the Positive
Social science concludes that students are more likely to do that which receives attention, especially from a trusted adult. So, when we attend to misbehavior, it's more likely to recur and therefore damage our culture of success. If we attend to or reinforce the positive, the desired inverse is also true. So, together we'll learn the three pronged model of reinforcing the positive, which eliminates poor student behavior and increases the good - thus growing our culture of success.
Principle Four - Student-Centered Instruction
The first three principles prepare the way for teachers to do what they do best – teach. They enable teachers to take full advantage of classroom instructional time, for students are then fully engaged, focused, and motivated to learn and achieve. So, together we'll learn to capitalize on class culture ripe for learning by teaching the content in a manner most likely to achieve success – student-centered instruction.
